EXPENSIVE PLANES

GERMANS USE ELECTRON LONDON, Jan. 2p. Germany is building war planes of electron, a costly super-strong metal about one-third of the weight of the aluminium used in British aircraft. One of Britain's leading aircraft engineers stated that several of Germany's bombers are now built, of electron. He said: "The breaking strain of an aluminium casting is about nine tons, but the same casting of electron will take strains of 12 to 15 tons." Electron's drawback is that it costs about one-quarter more than aluminium. An official of the Society of British Aircraft Constructors said: "We use electron mainly for components oi airplanes, gun-turrnets, engine cowlings, but 1 understand German engineers are building complete machines oi electron."
