FIRES AT CONFERENCE
BRIGADES' EXPERIENCE
WANG ANUI OUTBREAKS
More than the average number of fires attend the venue of the fire brigade demonstrations in New Zealand, according to opinions expressed by a member attending the United Fire Brigades of New Zealand conference held 'm Wanganui this week. Wanganui, since the beginning of the week, has managed to stage five grass fires. Among the largest fires that have occurred in New Zealand where brigades have been assembled was one at Nelson a few years ago, when the old wooden cathedral was destroyed. During the same conference a motor garage was burned. The alarm for this fire was given just as a smoke concert to brigadesmen had finished. It is not customary for visiting firemen to take part in quelling fires outside their own towns, but they are always willing to give assistance if called upon. This they did in Nelson. Wanganui had 70 fires from April 1, 1933, to the end of the year. To date, this year the fires aggregate 51, of which 45 have been grass or rubbish fires.
