OLD CAR’S JOURNEY
AUCKLAND-WELLINGTON TWO MEN WIN WAGER A* 15-year-old car, driven from Auckland to Wellington for a wager, arrived in Wellington on Monday night after seven and three-quarter hours’ running from Wanganui. The drivers, Mr. D. Handricks, Auckland, and Mr. G. Yarral, Wellington, undertook. as one of the conditions of the wager, not to spend any money on the trip and that all petrol and other •necessities should be gained by relying on the generosity of others, and as this was carried out the wager was won.
Nine gallons of petrol were presented to the adverturous pair in Wanganui, and this, with a further two gallons given in Levin, brought “Galloping Gertie” in triumph to the capital city.
A warrant of fitness was carried, but the fitness of the car was questioned only twice during the whole trip. The first time the Taumarunui police had to be shown the warrant to be convinced, and the second time wag at midnight, when a sceptical constable halted them in Courtenay Place.
