A Madrid broadcast this afternoon stated that having “exhausted all means of persuasion" the Spanish Republican Defence Council had been obliged in the last few hours to use all arms and aircraft against the rebels. The Council trusted that the citizens would not allow themselves to be impressed by the rebellion. It was expected that calm would be restored in a few hours. Firing was audible in the city and suburbs. Communists in Madrid cut the communications between Madrid and Valencia, to which groups of Communists are making. Troops and tanks of the Defence Council are guarding Valencia, where many arrests have been made. An Independent Cable Service message from Burgos says it is reported that a rising has broken out in Murcia, Guadalajara and Almeria and has obtained a firm hold. Surrender of Communists Lisbon reports the reception of broadcasts from Madrid stating that two Communist companies in the Barajos sector had surrendered. The loyalists were advancing victoriously. Paris telephone communication with Madrid was cut off to-day. Broadcasts received there indicated that- General Miaja had closed all the exits. The loyalists were reinforced as a result of an urgent wireless appeal and were, marching on the Qommunists’ front lines which were being heavily bombed from the air. , The rebels were holding out -at a station hotel. Nineteen rebel leaders in Valencia were shot. / A Nationalist .broadcast from Burgos stated that the Republican warships at Bizerta would be- handed over to the Nationalists in accordance with international law. BRITISH OPINIONS (Reed. March 10, noon.) LONDON, March 9. Britain lias .not been notified officially of General Franco’s blockade of the Spanish Republican coast. Official quarters express the opinion that recognition of General Franco’s Government does not bestow belligerent rights and the right to blockade. Sinking of vessels on sight without warning would be an act of piracy. HOSPITAL SHIP URGED SPANISH REFUGEES PLIGHT IN FRANCE (British Official Wireless.) Reed. 9 a.m. RUGBY, March 3. A report by Major-General Sir John Kennedy, who visited the refugee camps and hospitals in the Pyrenees as the personal representative of Sir Arthur Stanley, chairman of the executive committee of the British Red Cross Society, has been brought to the notice of the ’British Government. A tribute is paid to the work done by France and the Red Cross Society. Major-General Kennedy emphasises the need for beds, blankets and linen as well as for more hospital accommodation in view of the increasing number of refugees and the resultant serious congestion, and lie is of the opinion that the best immediate help would be to dispatch a fully-equipped British hospital ship. The 'Spanish Republican, Dolores Irnvburi ("La Passionaria”), who on Monday reached Oran by air, today arrived at Marseilles, on route to Paris. She protested against the action of the French authorities at Oran in treating her as a prisoner. A French Communist deputy, M. Catala, said to journalists: “I saved her from Spain at the peril of my life. I will not allow anyone to bother her.”
