DRY SPELL BREAKS
PASTURES REFRESHED LIGHT CANTERBURY FALL Parched by weeks of hot weather, Canterbury was given relief on Wednesday from the threat of a serious dry spell by a south-west drizzle, which in most: districts, developed into steady rain late in the afternoon. As a reviver for feed and root crops the rain was of inestimable value to the whoie province. Although the rain was hardly heavy enough to have much effect on pastures it will refresh them considerably. The benefit to rape and turnip crops is greater. The fall represented many thousands of pounds to Canterbury farmers and further rain will alter their prospect from one of acute loss to at least a hopeful outlook for the coming winter. One of the great -benefits of the rain is that relief will be given from the menace of fire, which has been continual and imminent because of the parched countryside.
