DIXIE DEAN TRANSFERRED
England's greatest goal-scorer recently ended an association of 17 years' with English first-class soccer. Announcement of the transfer of W. R. (Dixie) Dean from Notts County to Sligo Rovers, an Irish Free State Club, came as a shock to a legion of soccer admirers.
The veteran centre-forward scored 37(j goals from 1923 until 1938, breaking a record set earlier in the century toy the late Stephen Bloomer, famous Derby County player. It was as leader of Everton’s attack chat Dean became known as one of soccer’s greatest centre-forwards, and during that time he was selected to represent England on 1(1 occasions. Dean's transfer to Ireland was a real surprise. Only a short time ago he declared he intended becoming a scout for a famous English team.
