Trenchant criticism of the Australian authorities was voiced at last evening’s meeting which adopted a resolution demanding the immediate lifting of the embargo on the import of potatoes from New Zealand. The motion was put before the meeting by Sir Frederick Stewart, M.H.R.. M.P. ‘ The chairman, Mr. R. B. Walker, M.L.A., said that the potato embargo had restricted inter-Empire trade by reducing trade between sister Dominions. lie added that, the position was "stupid and ridiculous."
Sir Frederick Stewart said: “This matter is an example of the narrow parochial view which appears to dominate the national policy. To-day you are paying £35 a ton for potatoes which should be available at half that price. How much longer are you going to tolerate it?”
