On the fifth day of the final cricket test between Marylebone and South Africa, the Marylebone batsmen completed their first innings with a total of 316, and at the drawing of stumps South Africa, had lost three wickets in the second innings for 193 runs, play finishing early on account of bad light.

South Africa, after England’s minor collapse, plodded along as in the first innings. Vanderbijl at one stage took an hour to add nine runs.

When the total had reached 190 without the loss of a wicket, a sudden change came over the game in the failing light and three wickets fell for one run and Hammond dropped Nourse.
