Silent since last night the Madrid wireless this morning announced the suppression of the Cartagena revolt including an attempt by followers of the deposed Republican Prime Minister, Senor Negrin, to seize the arsenal.

Madrid also reported officially that the army chiefs who had been in revolt had surrendered to the Defence Council.

The Defence Council instructed the revolting troops to return to their posts.

One revolting battalion was forced to surrender after a tank attack on the Madrid racecourse.

Planes machine-gunned and bombed Communists behind street barricades, while field guns shelled buildings where other groups were sheltering.

Communists in Madrid erected barriers on the main road to Cuenca, holding up munition lorries going to Madrid. They seized artillery from a vital defence position.

The Defence Minister, General Casado, has listed (iO Communist leaders to be shot.
