Borough Reserves

Sir,—l noticed that a report made to the Borough Council stated that the shrubs and trees at the Rutene road croquet park were thriving except where stock had destroyed them; evidently the sheep which are permitted to graze through an ordinary wire fence. My wife and I passed by there last Sunday and we noticed a fine large hunch of Scotch thistle in full bloom adjoining the courts. Perhaps these are being cultivated for some purpose for I have been told that the gardener or caretaker can be frequently seen on his knees removing weeds out of the lawns, possibly Scotch thistles. This may he a modern form of gardening, but I just thought it should be reported alongside the other report about the robust growth, in case those who do not see these things should think “everything in the garden is lovely.” Perhaps we are only supposed to look at the. lovely things, in which case I apologise lor drawmg attention to this menace of S f.. img thistles not only to the ••rccuet lawns but to all gardeners in the viemitv BOWLER.
