Newcomers to Remember

are responsible for “names in electrics,” and gratifying bank balancer to their owners. This time last year screengoers had never heard of Hedy Lamarr, Minnie Dupree, Jo Ann Sanders, John Garfield, or Robert Morley . . . new these names are almost as well known as those of Clark Gable *and Mickey Mouse. Miss Lamarr glamoured for attention in “Algiers”; Robert Morley, now playing the title role of Oscar Wilde in a Broadway stage play, stole, the honours in “Marie Antoinette”, Minnie Dupree, the little old lady of “The Young in Heart,” managed to be sweet without being saccharine; John Garfield's vivid personality was the outstanding feature of “Four

Daughters," and the face of Jo Ann Sayers was one to remember in "Young Dr. Kildare.” An Englishman, Michael Redgrave, brought a new brand of passive charm to the screen in the exciting "The Lady Vanishes,” while Naughton Wayne as the silent Englishman in the same picture was compelling, because of his pained and expressive indifference in a practically wordless part. Two new leading men, Richard Carlson and’’ Jeffrey Lynn, are not too obviously handsome for their looks to deflect from their ability, and both possess charm. -- r. Carl-
