TRACK AND STABLE

HIGH CASTE'S WIN

ITATLED .AS CHAMPION

VETERAN SCO IRE’S OPINION

By “Trenton"

The southern jumper, Gold Wren, has been troubled by lameness of late and it has interfered with his training.

Boswell’s Mission

After a short spell Boswell has been put in training again and is to be given a special preparation with the Riverton Cup in view.

Princess Doreen Filly

The first ol' Princess Doreen's progeny has arrived at Ricearton to be trained by T. 11. Gillett for Mr. E. Hay. This is a chestnut yearling filly by Iliad. She is well grown, and on appearances and breeding should make a smart golloper. Princess Doreen, now at the Elderslie stud, has a chestnut foal at foot by Solici-tor-General, and is in foal again to the same sire.

Better Than Ajax? After High Caste’s victory in the Alma Stakes at Caulfield a well-known judge said: “There’s the horse that will beat Ajax next year," while another prominent racing man’s comment was: “The nearest approach to Phar Lap we have seen."

The veteran James Scobie rated him the best horse in Melbourne, not excluding Ajax. Forward Showing

One of the surprises of the Franklin meeting was the forward showing of the five-year-old mare Miss Clipper, who finished second to Noitaro in the Waiuku Hack Handicap. She was not prominent in the early stages, but was running on strongly at the end. Miss Clipper is a daughter of Raceful and Lady Ristori and is trained by her owner, Mr. W. Cook, at Te Rapa. Great National Hope An authority writing in the London Sporting Life remarks: “A good many who saw the grand race for the Nottinghamshire Handicap Steeplechase left the course firmly convinced that they had seen the winner of this year’s Grand National. Among them were Tom Coulthwaite and Jack Anthony, who are well qualified to express an opinion. They were in complete agreement that Royal Danieli ran one of the best Aintree trials we shall see, and that he is the best steeplechaser that has run in this country dor a good number of years." Ajax—Defaulter An Australian sporting paper states that the sensational New Zealand colt. Defaulter, will not meet Ajax before the Chipping Norton Stakes at Warwick Farm on April 1. Rosehill officials hoped to stage the first sensational clash between the champions in the Rawson Stakes on March 25, but Defaulter’s trainer, F. A. Roberts, declared that the colt would definitely make his Australian debut at Warwick Farm. Had it been possible to bring Ajax and Defaulter together, the Rosehill committee would have considered increasing the £SOO added money of the Rawson Stakes. The Chipping Norton Stakes is worth £650, but. the extra prize has not weighed one ounce in the Defaulter decision. Defaulter’s preparation will not be rushed unnecessarily, merely to oppose Ajax, and the extra week's training will make a difference to the great colt. “Any idea that Defaulter wa. brought from New Zealand especially to oppose Ajax at w.f.a. is incorrect. If in the ordinary course of his autumn racing in Sydney, Defaulter meets Ajax, well and good. The longer the journey the better, said Roberts. . “But there are other prizes to win, without stacking Defaulter against a champion like Ajax all the nue, an Defaulter's programme will be mapped out to give him the greatest winning chance.”
