Supreme Court Closes The quarterly session of the Supreme Court i.n Gisborne closed today, having continued over eight days. Mr. Justice Northcroft, who presided at the .session, was to leave for the south this afternoon. VVairoa Traffic Licenses Forty-four drivers’ licenses were issued in the Wairoa County during the past month by the traffic inspector, Mr. R. W. Hawthorne, making the total for the year to date 1409. A total of £32,851 0s 4d was levied and the amount collected was £31,290 12s 4d, leaving £ISOO 8s outstanding. A total of 95.25 per cent was collected, which was a little better than the corresponding period last year.-—Special. Boy Fractures Arm As a result of a fall from, a horse when reaching up to a bough of a pine tree to gather cones in a paddock near his nome last evening, Boyd Greig, the 11 -year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Greig, Waerenga-a-hika, suffered a fractured left forearm. The lad was admitted to the Cook Hospital at 8.10 o'clock for (treatment and this morning his condition was regarded as satisfactory. Rainfall at Hicks Bay A total of 1.31 in. of rain was recorded at Matarau, Hicks Bay, in February, all 'but ,19in. falling on February 6. Last year Matarau had the remarkably high tally o'f 27.01 in. for 17 rain days in February. Since January Matarau has gauged G.47in. of rain, compared with 32.46 m. for the first two months of 1938. The recorder adds that February proved a month of almost unbroken sunshine. Fined For Drunkenness Appearing on Monday before Mr. J. D. (Clark. J.P., in the Opotiki Police Court, Harold Howard Walker Was convicted and fined £l, in default two days’ imprisonment, on a charge of being found drunk in a public place On Tuesday the accused appeared before Mr. E. L. Walton, S.M., in the Police Court and was convicted and discharged on a charge of breaking his prohibition order.

Argument at Dance Over Girl Art argument over a girl caused the disorderlv behaviour outside a dance hall at Woodlands of two young men, William Laird, aged 22, and Bruce Hunt, aged 19. who pleaded guilty to a charge of behaving in a disorderly manner and were each lined £1 and costs 10s by Mr. E. L. Walton-, S.M., in the Opotiki Police Court. It was said that the two young men had not started to fight, but that their argument was heated and they were on the point of coming to blows when separated.

Emergency Committee A letter was received from the Wairoa Harbour Board at yesterday’s meeting of the Wairoa County Council inquiring whether the council considered a meeting should 'be called 1o discuss setting up an organisation of national security to deal with emergencies such as earthquake disasters. The chairman, Mr. A. T, Carroll, Cr, D. V. Thomas, and the clerk. Mr. B. CL Signall, were appointed a sub-commii-lee from the council to meet other local 'bodies to discuss the question ol the advisability of setting up such act organisation. —Special. Surf Club Tour at Easter

Preliminary arrangements for the tour at Easter of a party of surfmen to Piha, Auckland, were made last evening at a meeting 1 of the management committee of the Wainui Surf Life-Saving Club. Tipossibility of organising a dan.ee to raise funds to assist with the financing of the trip was discussed and it was decided to calll a general meeting of members Cor Tuesday evening. It was to be the intention. of the club to have a boat crew and reel team make the visit to the Auckland club, and the boat captain Mr. R. Sinclair, was instructed to start with the training of a crew early next week.

Motor-cycle Mishap at Whangara A Ruatoria motor-cyclist, Paul Reid, aged 19, and his sister, Miss Phyllis Reid, aged 15, who was on the pillion, were involved 'm a mishap at Whangara during the week-end, when their machine came into collision with a bicycle ridden by a 12-year-old Maori boy, Romati Hapu, Whangara pa. The two' on the motor-cycle were thrown from the machine, the girl being brought to Gisborne to receive treatment’ for cuts and abrasions c>n the face, a bleeding nose, and a dislocated wrist. The young man escaped with a cut eyelid and abrasions, and it was understood that the Maori boy was unhurt. Unusual Motor Accident

While attempting 4o stop a runaway car at 9.15 pan. last Saturday Mr. Francis John Rowley, 210 Ormond road, received slight- injuries to his leg. The son of the injured) man, Mr. Allan F. Rowley, was driving the car from Mangarara station to Gisborne and, when two miles from the Waimat’a store and attempting to turn the vehicle, it slipped .into a water-table. The wheel was jacked up and Mr. F. J. Rowley pushed the car forward to clear the ditch, while bis son attended to the jack. It was freed of the obstacle, (but when Mr. Rowley attempted to stop the car’s career down a decline he was pulled over on the road and suffered flight injuries. The vehicle came to rest a short distance down the road and was only superficially damaged.
