INCREASED REVENUE
GISBORNE RAILWAY
MORE SHEEP CARRIED
The Gisborne section of the railways has just had .a busy period, particularly with the carriage of livestock, and for the four .weeks ended March 4 the gross revenue increased by £398, compared with the corresponding period last year. During the past four weeks, 22,948 sheep were carried, an average of more than 5500 per week and an increase of 3527 on last year’s period, while cattle, totalling 280, numbered approximately six times that of the previous period. The carriage of timber showed a Slight decline, while other goods, principally metal, increased in tonnage. The following figures for the four weeks ended March 4 have been supplied by the stationimaster-in.-ch.arge, Mr. J. W. Fergie, together with the returns for the corresponding . four weeks a year ago:—
, The increase in live stock was due to movements of store sheep to and from the sales at Matawhero and Matawai and to increased traffic of fat sheep to the freezing works. The increase in other goods, mainly metal, continued with the prosecution of the railway works on the Gisborn.e-Wai-kokopu section and to bridge building on the main roads" and requirements for the maintenance of highways. A slight decrease in the timber traffic was caused by a decline in log traffic while repairs were occasioned to plant at the mills and also to changes of location at .the bush.
