PUBLICITY FOR WOOL

SOUTH AMERICAN SUPPORT SECRETARIAT’S REPORT Promising results from representations made to Argentina, Uruguay, and Chile for support of the Dominions movement for world publicity for wool are reported in a special statement from the International Wool Secretariat in London, * which has just been received by the Australian Wool Board. The Argentine Ministry of Agriculture has informed the secretariat that the republic is interested in co-operat-ing with the Dominion growers, and that legislation has been introduced which, if it becomes law, will make this co-operation possible. The Ministry will make a further announcement in due course. An enthusiastic reception has been given to the secretariat’s representations by the Uruguayan authorities in Britain, and these proposals have been submitted to Uruguay for consideration. The Chilean Trade Counsellor in London hafe been approached, and representations have been made to the Chilean Government. It is felt that on the score of the fight against wool substitutes the ground has been well prepared, as the Chilean nitrate industry has had bitter experience of competition from synthetic nitrates. Enthusiasm has also been Shown by sheep breeders in the Faulkland Islands, who are investigating the possibility of making a grant to. the secretariat. Progress in England In England also progress has been made, following an approach to the Ministry of Agriculture and the National Farmers’ Union. Proposals are being considered by which funds for propaganda in favour of wool may be raised. One suggestion is that part of funds which may become available for publicity for British-grown meat may be allocated to advance wool publicity. This amount would be representative of the wool industry’s share of the funds. The secretariat reports that as a result of a recent show at Clarldges, London, a decided impetus has been given to the wearing of woollen evening dresses and other dress goods. It is also felt that there are great possibilities of winning back for wool much of the popularity gained by artificial silk in the underwear field. Following the successful exhibition in Paris, similar exhibitions will be held in Nottingham, Leicester, Bradford, Leeds, Glasgow, Hawick, and other centres, where manufacturers representing all branches of the industry will attend. A report is being prepared on promotional work for men’s wear, and an c-ndeavour is being made to introduce woollen shirts for men. In addition, work is being done for the introduction of woollen sheets. There is also a move to use felts for window displays, and moquette for motor car upholstery, and for railway upholstery in the Dominions.
