LOWER WAGES SOUGHT
TIMBER WORKERS’ CASE EMPLOYERS’ CLAIMS (P»r Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. Affecting more than 8600 workers, negotiations were commenced in the Conciliation Council yesterday for a new award in the Dominion to cover timber workers. Three days have been set down for the hearing. Yesterday’s discussions centred entirely around Hie interpretation of clauses. There is little variation from the existing award in tiie new claims and counter-claims regarding the hours of work, but an average reduction of ltd an hour in the existing rates of pay is being sought by the employers. The workers are asking for an average all-round increase of 3d an hour and increases in holidays. The dispute is tile first heard in Wellington for many years in winch the employers are seeking a reduction in wages
