CLIFFORD STREET TREES

REMOVAL OF WILLOWS

RED GUMS TO BE PLANTED

A decision to remove all willows on both sides of Clifford street between Fitzherbert street and McLean street was reached by the Borough Council last night, when it was agreed to replace the willows with red gums.

“These basket willows are rampant growers, and are quite unsuited for such positions as they occupy in Clifford /street," stated the supervising gardener, Mr. T. R. Andrew, in a

report on the matter

“Heavy pruning was carried out last spring in preference to winter pruning as a more effective check on growth, but in spite of this, heavy pruning is again necessary at the present time, and when the autumn rains come a

lurther clearance will have to be made along the lower branches lo clear the heads of podesttians, as the rain tends lo weigh the slender branches down. In short, to get general clearance it would be necessary to practically mutilate the willows again to save the frequent light cuttings of a more temporary nature.

“To remove the willows and replace with standard dowering cherries and autumn tinted rhus trees alternatively would be the most suitable way of pioviding the site with shade, beauty and privacy. Being deciduous, these trees would not obstruct sunlight in winter. “An alternative scheme would be to remove every second tree from the northern end and replace with standard cherries. This would do away with the worst offending trees and when the cherries are well established take out the remaining willows and plant the rhus trees.” The motion to remove the willows and for the planting of the red gums was moved by Cr. li. H. De Cosla, who Disjected to cherry trees being put ■ lie said the residents concerned favoured red gums.
