Playing conditions were ideal when Knight, 29, and Robertson, 3, resumed Otago’s second innings in the match against Sir Julien Cahn’s team today to the bowling of Phillipson. Knight scored a single off the second ball, but the sixth was fatal to Robertson. The batsman played the ball which trickled back on to his stumps. Moloney joined Knight. Watts took up the attack. Knight chopped a ball hard past point for a single and repeated the stroke in Phillipson’s next over for a couple. Two balls later he played forward to a good length delivery and was clean bowled. Phillipson had now two for three this morning. The second ball that Elmes received struck him on the pads. An appeal from the wicketkeeper was allowed, Phillipson securing his third wicket. Cameron was the oncomer. The first ball from Phillipson went perilously near the stumps. He opened his account by playing Watts past point for a single. Moloney repeated this stroke with the next ball. The batsmen went through for another single, Hardstaff being applauded for smart fielding. The batsmen were obviously unhappy against the fast bowlers. Moloney scored a single and a brace off Phillipson. Moloney broke a quiet spell by turning Watts to leg for two, bringing 80 up. Phillipson obtained further success when Cameron reached forward and had his leg pin knocked back. Four wickets had fallen for an additional 17 runs.

Mills joined the captain. Phillipson was inclined to drag his foot and was twice no-balled. Mills and Moloney each pulled him away to leg for singles.
