POLICE ELUDED
KING COUNTRY FUGITIVE
SEEN DODGING IN SCRUB
The police searching in the Kaitieke district, King Country, were unable to close in on the escaped Maori prisoner. Tu Whakarara, last week. They sa’.v him, but lost him in high scrub. The fugitive appeared dodging about in scrub a>nd on Friday had not been located. It was discovered that someone had broken into a hut while the owners were away and two loaves of bread had been taken.
With the hot weather and rough country, members of the police party are having a fatiguing time, especially as the search has been kept going day and night. An eye-witness of the search stated that the police were within 40 yards of the fugitive when he took a flying leap into the scrub and was soon lost sight of. He was without trousers part of the time until he broke into the hut and secured another pair.
