The latest estimate of the number of Chinese troops is 2.000,000 adequately officered and of excellent morale, while Japanese prisoners display increasing war weariness and anxiety to return home.
In order to overcome the Chinese Eighth Route Army guerrillas in the Shansi province, the Japanese are erecting blockhouses in the hope of enclosing them in an impenetrable ring.
VIOLENCE IN HANKOW WOUNDING OF CONSUL PASSAGE AFTER CURFEW (Recdj March. 7, noon) HANKOW, March G. Japanese sentries struck and slightly injured the Portuguese Consul who was attempting a passage in the administrative district after curfew. Chinese raiders killed a guard and servant while unsuccessfully searching for the Japanese leader Chin 'Lung-Chang residing in the French Concession.

The Chinese Consulate-General has received a cablegram from- Chungking stating that a Japanese report that the Chinese Government intends to remove to Kunming, in the Yunnan l Province, is absolutely without foundation.
