COAL TAKEN FROM SHIP
FORMER STEWARD FINED SUPPLY FOB HOME (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this 1 day. A fine of £lO was imposed by Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.M., in ifhe Police Court yesterday on Harold Francis NichoLls, aged 57, a 'ship’s steward, who pleaded guilty to the theft of six bags of coal valued at £1 Os Gd, the property of tihe Union Steam Ship Company. The police stated that the accused, when he was chief steward in the Kakapo, got a carrier to take the coal to bis home at Kilbirnie. He had been seen by the captain filling the bags with coal with the assistance of the cook.
Counsel for the accused said his client had already lost his position and. until the offence bad an unblemished record. He -took full responsibility for the action and had advised the police that the cook had acted under his instructions.
