By the small margin of .45 of a pdin't the Wainui Surf Life-Saving Club's representative team registered a success over the A team, of the Gisborne Amateur Surf and Swimming Club in the annual competition, held yesterday at the Waikanae Beach it'or the cup presented by Mr. George A. Nicholls.
This was the second year of the competition, the Gisborne club being the holders of the trophy. The cup was awarded on points scored in the six-man 'rescue and resuscitation event.
. The placings were as follows: Wainui (J: R. Beckett, C. Smith, N. A. Williamson, cantain, J. Campbell, D. Blackweil and J. W. Gandeil), G7.6G points, 1. Gisborne A (K. Morse, D. Lange. T. S. Wauchop, captain, R. Taylor, R. McLatchie and S. Thompson), 67.21 points, 2. Gisborne B ,(T. Fairweather, D. Caldwell, R. Read, captain), C. Ward, J. Seton and R. Thompson), 59.93 points, 3.
The programme opened with a march past, and then the cup event was held, Messrs. H. Le Bas, A. Knights and H. Wall acting as judges. In the swim out to the respective buoys Beckett (Wainui) established a lead over Morse. Waikanae A, arriving at his buoy about 10yds. ahead, with Waikanae B some distance back. Lange, Waikanae A, made an erratic course in his swim in the belt and was just ahead of Smith, the Wainui beltman.
FrescnLv the cup to the winning team. <Vc donor, Mr. (Nicholls, commented on the high standard attained by the two winning teams and said it was pleasing to see the efficient manner in which they did their work. In reply, the secretary of the Wainui club. Mr. Beckett, congratulated the losing team on its 'performance, and explained that the Wainui club owed much to the assistance of Mi A. H. DeCosta. a Gisborne club member, who had helped with the preliminary coaching of the Wainui team.
Results of the remaining events were as follows: — 'Beach Relay (three teams of six). —Wainui, 1; Waikanae A and Waikanae B. dead-heat, 2. Surf Race.—S. Thompson, Gisborne, 1: K. Morse, Gisborne. 2: D. Lange, Gisborne, 3; R. Read, Gisborne, 4; L. Clark. Wainui. 5; D. Blackweil, Wainui. 6.
