VICTORY BY ONE MINUTE

EXCITING WAIROA MATCH NOMADS BEAT SWIFTS FRASERTOWN-ROVER DRAW (Special to tho Herald.) WAIROA, this day. Cricket thrills were provided at the Clyde Domain in the Wairoa Cricket Association's Hopper Shield competition on Saturday afternoon in the match Swil'ts v. Nomads. The game was marked by many exciting incidents, and finished up with a race against the clock. Nomads just managing to scrape home with a fivepoint victory with only a minute to spare before stumps, and a margin of five runs. The game between Rovers and Frasertown, which was played in Frasertown, ended in a draw. With only one more game to go in the Hopper Shield series Rovers would appear to be in an almost unassailable position. As a result of their draw with Frasertown they now have 32 points; while Nomads have 27A points. These two teams will meet next Saturday, and with an outright win of five points, which hardly seems likely, Nomads would win the competition by half a point. Although Rovers are in such a handy position, this match should create considerable interest as Rovers has not yet succeeded in beating Nomads. AN EXCITING TUSSLE The game between Nomads and Swil'ts was perhaps the most exciting that has been .seen in Wairoa for many years, and there is no doubt that more such games would do much to foster interest in the sport here. Swifts won the toss and elected to bat first, and right irom the start wickets began to fall to the two Nomads slow trundlers, E. Beer and E. Coleman. Once again the Nomads' fielding was poor, several catches being dropped, but, despite this, there were only 03 runs on the board when the last Swifts' wicket fell, B. Martin being the lop-scorer with 19 runs. Bowling for Nomads, Coleman finished up with the fine average of seven wickets for 24 runs on the first innings, Beer taking three for 31. Nomads, in their first strike fared even worse than Swifts, two wickets falling for 20, three for 22, four for 20 and five for 27. With nine wickets down for 40 Nomads required to make 18 runs with the last wicket to gain a lead on the first innings. G. F. Hudson joined W. Martin at the crease and these two were responsible for a real fighting stand, hitting up 10 before Martin was run out. This gave Swifts a lead of one run on the first innings C. Heslop, with his leg trap combined with a fine exhibition of fielding was responsible for the poor showing made by the Nomads batsmen. He captured seven wickets for 29 runs, Crisp taking two for 30.

Due mainly to a fine knock by B. Martin, who scored 41 before he was stumped ot! Coleman, Swifts in the second visit to the crease made 94, Rees compiling 10 and Heslop 13. Bowling for Nomads Beer took five wickets for 39, H. G. Jamieson three for 10, and Coleman two for 37. With only three-quarters of an hour to play Nomads required 92 runs to gain a win. Beer and the Nomads captain, L. Grieve, opened, and immediately set about the bowling in fine style, there being 02 runs on the board before the partnership was broken, Grieve succeeding in making 27. Beer, who was giving a great display of batting, continued to paste the bowling, scoring of! everything that came along. With three wickets down for 79 there was no little lime left in which to make the required number, but the Nomads' batsmen continued to deal recklessly with deliveries from both Crisp and Heslop, both of whom were bowling better than they had done in the first innings. With only two minutes to go Nomads still needed runs, Swifts' total being passed with a boundary shot by Coleman only 1 minute before 6.30 p.m. Nomads had knocked up 97 for the loss of four wickets. Beer was still undefeated, his total being 47. Scores:— SWIFTS First Innings Crisp, stp.
