WAIROA CEMETERY ACCESS
IMPROVEMENT SCHEME PROPOSITION CARRIED COUNTY COUNCIL TO HELP (Special to -he Herald.) WAIROA, this day. A proposal to raise a loan to carry out a scheme of improved access to the cemetery was approved by the Wairoa Borough Council at its monthly meeting. The total cost of the scheme is £llOO, and the appi-oximate annual charge for interest and redemption for a 10-year loan at 3J per cent is £132.
It was pointed out that the Wairoa County Council had agreed to bear one-third of the annual charge on the cost of sealing Clyde road and onehalf of the annual charge on the other works. If these proportions were accepted the County Council would find £54 per year of the annual charge of £132, and the borough the balance of £7B.
“I must say that the County Council has met the thing in a fair and broad-minded light,” stated the Mayor. “It will be a very great advantage indeed and I don’t think anyone will begrudge one penny spent on the cemetery.”
In reply to a question as to when the work would be put in hand, the Mayor pointed out that it would come into next year’s estimates.
Cr. A. W. Archibald stated that he could not see that this work was so essential as .to be approved of at present.
Cr. W. H. Brady thought that the work could not be, done too soon and now was the opportune time. “The County Council has met us very well and it would be foolish of us not to take advantage of it,” said Cr. J. B. Cook.
“I am in favour of the proposition,” stated Cr. J. O. Scott, who added that the present entrance was dangerous. The opinion that it was necessary work which should be completed as early as possible, was expressed by Cr. W. H. Flint.
The proposal was carried, and it was decided that a letter of appreciation should be sent to the Wairoa County Council for the manner in which it met the borough in the matter.
