LIVE SNAKE FOUND
GISBORNE DISCOVERY BURIED IN SAM) HEAP An unusual visitor to Gis'borne in the form of a live snake was found at the back of H.S. Motors garage yesterday. • The snake was taken to the High School and delivered to the care of Mr. E. L. Evans, who has charge of the schol museum, where it has now found a place, preserved in spirits.
Apparently, the snake is of the water variety and similar to the one found on Mahia Peninsula a few months ago. The water snake occasionally finds its way to New Zealand shores, but there is no case of it having lived here any length of time or of having bred here. The one found in Gisborne yesterday was discovered in a load of sand which had been delivered from the beach a short time before for concreting purposes. The snake appeared when, the sand was toeing opened ready for work to commence. The isnake, which was not very active when found, had a brown, scaley appearance on top, the colour underneath being yellow. It was about as thick as a sausage.
