WAIROA CEMETERY
IMPROVEMENTS NEEDED
COUNTY COUNCIL APPROVES
(Special to the Herald.) WAIROA. this day
A proposal submitted by the Wairoa Borough Council at Wednesday's meeting of the Wairoa County Council, for the provision of better access to the Wairoa cemetery by sealing the road from the intersection of Clyde road and Lahore street and by reducing the steep grade leading to the cemetery, was approved and the council decided to contribute toward the cost of the work.
If is estimated that the work will cost £llOO, which it is proposed should be raised by way of a loan. The Borough Council approached the County Council en Wednesday with a request that it sould bear a proportion of the cost.
A letter outlining the proposals was received from the Borough Council and a deputation comprising the town clerk, Mr. 11. H. O'Loughlen, and the borough engineer, Mr. A. C. Twyford, waited on the council to explain any further details.
The Borough Council's letter pointed out the urgent necessity of having the road from the intersection of Clyde road and Lahore street sealed and of finding an easier grade to the new portion of the cemetery and having this sealed also. In addition, continued the letter, if the council agreed with the proposal it would be an opportune time to clean up the whole of the cemetery by constructing a retaining wall along the lower parking area, seal this area and the road between the new and old portions of the ccmeterv. and the present drive, which would be used then as an exit. If the County Council agreed to these suggestions it was proposed to raise a loan of £llOO at 3£ per cent with a term of 10 years, on which the approximate annual charge for interest and redemption would be £132.
The opinio:! was expressed by Cr. S. A. Dickie that the request was a reasonable one and he thought the council should assist in providing decent access.
It was decided, on the motion of Cr. Dickie, that the County Council agree to contribute toward the cost on the following basis:—One-third of the proposed loan charges -covering the cost of sealing Clyde road to the cemetery gates and one-half of the proposed loan charges covering the work within the cemetery property and subject to the Borough Council maintaining the portion of Clyde road to be sealed.
