SPORTS AT TE KARAKA ATTENDANCE RECORD GATE INCREASES 25% Last year's attendance record for the New Year's Day sports meeting at Te Karaka was eclipsed at yesterday's meeting, when the gate receipts showed an increase of 25 per cent on those for the 1937 meeting.

The ideal weather conditions were responsible in a large measure for the success of the meeting, -and the popularity of the fixture was reilected also in the excellent entries received for all branches of events.

A wide range of competitions was put through in line style by the officials of the Te Karaka club, and spectators showed unabated interest right to the concluding event. The .standard of riding in the horse events was highly praised by the judge, Mr. C. Gaukrodger. He safcf that the jumping on the whole was the best he Had ever seen on the grounds, and specially mentioned the performance of the winning horse in the open leading competition, Russet Moor. For a country fixture, said Mr. A. McDonald, the judge of the national dancing, the dancing was good and the number of entries very satisfactory. However, there were instances when the positions of the dancers seemed to be faulty, and he was a little disappointed with the performances in the Highland Fling and Sean Truibhais.

In the professional athletic and cycling events there were several notable performances, one of the outstanding efforts being that of H. J. McLeod, the scratch man in the one mile flat handicap.
