ELECTRIFIED RAILWAYS

During the year there has been record activity regarding the electrification of British railways.
In the home counties underground tube extensions linked with main line developments represented an important feature of this work.
The Southern Railway opened a new section which completed the electrification of lines to Portsmouth and Portsmouth to Brighton. The Southern Railway which now has the largest electrified suburban system in the world will to-morrow complete another important stage of its development with the formal opening of the new electrified sections of line linking Reading, Ascot, Aldershot and Guildford. These sections will complete the electrification of the outer suburban area of the Southern Railway and the 43 route miles involved bring the total electrified track of railway to 055 route miles.
