IMPROVED STANDARD

WOMEN'S CRICKET WELLINGTON-CANTERBURY (Par Press Association.^ WELLINGTON, this day. That women's cricket in New Zealand, though not yet up to anything like the form displayed by the English women's team which toured the Dominion in 1935, is steadily improving, was shown by the form displayed on the Basin Reserve yesterday afternoon when a match for the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield, of which Wellington are the holders, was begun.

A crowd of about 300 thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon's play under summer conditions.

Canterbury had first use of a firm wicket and fast outfield, and scored 173. Features of the innings were a sound 45 by P. Taylor and a dashing knock for 47 by P. Blackler, who hit with great power. An outstanding bowling performance was put up for Wellington by J. Holmes, who captured eight wickets for 40 off 17 overs. Wellington, when stumps were drawn at 6.30 p.m., had lost four wickets for 125 runs. D. Hatcher, E. Daniells, H. Buck and L. Harris all scored steadily. The Canterbury bowling, though steady, was not particularly hostile, but it. was a tribute to the fielding that three of four Wellington batsmen, who were dismissed, were run out. The match will be concluded to-day. Scores:— CANTERBURY First Innings M. Marks, b Holmes .. .. 16 H. Watson, c Buck, b Pilcher .. 18 P. Taylor, c Stenberg, b Holmes 45 J.
