TITLE-HOLDERS TESTED
CANTERBURY TENNIS (I’or Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. The element of surprise which has been a feature of play in the Canterbury lawn tennis championships nearly upset calculations to-day for .1. Gunn and Miss Margaret Beverley, iti the combined doubles. The Dominion title-holders were extended to the utmost in their quarter-final match. Twice they trailed behind in the third set and, perhaps, they were rather lucky that their opponents lapsed into errors. .file weather was sunny when play was resumed to-day but a crosscourt wind was a factor which had to be taken into account, especially in lobbing exchanges. The courts had dried out splendidly from the soaking they received over the week-end. Results: — Mixed Doubles Quarter-finals: J. W. Gunn and Miss M. Beverley d. C. I l ’. Penfold and Miss N. Beverley, (S —2, 3 —G, 9—7. A. R Cant and Miss I. Poole d. T. W. Patterson and Miss M. Wake, B—G,8 —G, /;—2. R. G. Pattinson and Miss K. Armstrong d. 11. Dyrnond and Mrs. V. C. Browne, G —2, G—o.
