REQUEST FOR REFORM

AMERICAN TREATIES POSITION OF THE SENATE WASHINGTON, Dec. 27. Senator W. E. Borah stated to-day that he would ,ask outright for the repeal of the Reciprocal Trade Agreements Act, or failing this, its amendment in order to restore to the Senate its power of ratification or rejection of pacts negotiated by the executive which, under the present law, do not require approval by the Senate. He asserted that much disconent existed between the Democrat Minister, Mr. Sumner Wells, and Republican Congressmen over the present arrangement. He added that he had received many protests from, national organisations which he feared would effect various treaties. The latest protest was from the National Woolgrowers’ Association, which was concerned regarding possible concessions in the proposed agreement with Australia.
