'FOUGHT LIKE A WILD CAT’
CONSTABLE RESISTED WAIROA MAN GAOLED (Special to tho Herald.) WAIROA, this day. “He must be mixing bricks with beer," stated Sergeant D. Clark in tho Wairoa Police Court yesterday when Patrick Dennis McCarthy, aged 37, appeared before Messrs. V. E. Winter and O. Jonson, J.P.s, charged with three offences. The accused was charged with being found drunk in a public place, with violently resisting a constable while in the execution of his duty, and with using obscene language. He pleaded guilty to all three charges. Sergeant Clark told the court that the accused had not been long back in Wairoa. He was here some years ago, having since (been to New Guinea and the Islands. “He came back some months ago and I cannot say if he has been really sober since he has been back,” added the sergeant, who pointed out that the accused had a job at the brickyard. On Tuesday, said the sergeant, the accused was hanging around the hotel drunk and was told by Constable A. McLellan to get along. The accused got a bit cheeky and the constable got hold of 'him to take 'him to the station. They got along the street a bit when the accused jerked away suddenly and hit the constable on the jaw. He fought like a wild-cat, biting and kicking and had to be handcuffed. “The accused is getting a bit of a pest and a nuisance in the town,” concluded the sergeant, who pointed out that he had been put off the public works at Tuai with two others because of drink. The accused told the bench that he had a touch of malaria and he could not stand drink.
The accused was convicted and discharged on the charge of drunkenness, but on the charge of resisting a constable he was convicted and sentenced to one month’s imprisonment in the Napier Gaol. On the charge of using obscene language the accused was convicted and ordered to be imprisoned for two weeks, the sentences to be cumulative.
“We are not going to stand for this sort of thing,” concluded Mr. Winter.
