NEW YEAR GALA

CARNIVAL AT WAIKANAE BATHING’ BELLE (’ONTEST* SATURD A Y’S PROGRAMMETo celebrate the closing of the old year and the advent of the new, a beach gala at which a bathing belle contest will be a central feature will be conducted on Saturday evening atthe Waikanae Beach by the social committee of the Gisborne Returned Soldiers’ Association. It is hoped to make the function even more successful than that held at the Waikanae Beach on Guy Fawke’s Night.

The committee will not lack assistance in the management of its carnival, for the Thirty-Thousand Club and other bodies to which the returned soldiers have given valued assistance in the past have accepted gladly the invitation to return the compliment

For the bathing belle contest, a number of entries are in hand already, and there will be facilities for post entries as well. Other features of the programme will include a concert party, a display of wrestling, public dancing on the tennis courts at the beach, and a 'display of fireworks especially imported from England.

The W.E.C.M.R. Band will be in attendance at the carnival, and pipers also will provide music for Scottish dances. The special lighting of the beach and promenade will be used again, and it is anticipated that the attendance will run into thousands. Careful preparations have been made for car-parking and the control of traffic, which will be similar to the arrangements made for Guy Fawke’s Night.

In addition to the attractions referred to, the R.S.A. social committee will offer the public opportunities for trials of skill, in the form of a number of booth games. These will be in charge of experienced managers, and should add greatly' to the entertainment value of the carnival.
