JUNIOR HIGH JUMP

POVERTY BAY RECORD V 1 ST TOR ’ S PE RFC KM. AXC E AMATEUR OUT- MEETING A feature of the Gisborne Amateur Athletic and Harrier Club's third track meeting of the season, held on the Childers Road Reserve last evening, was the success of two visitors from Auckland, N. W. and A. Thorn. The two brothers were prominent in high jump events, N. W. Thom establishing a Poverty Bay high jump record when he cleared sft. BAin. The younger brother, A. Thom, performed well in the bovs’ high jump, clearing 4ft. sin. N. W. Thom also annexed the senior 100yds. handicap. An interesting programme of athletic and cycling events was staged. The entries in all the boys’ events were most encouraging and there were several promising athletes and cyclists amongst the competitors. The club is indeed fortunate in gaining the interest of several really keen lads. Miss L. Scott, who won both the 100yds. ladies’ handicap and the 50yds. ladies' scratch race, should be a strong contender for centre championship honours.

The cycling events provided some interesting racing and with the handicap men making every use of their start the back-markers just failed to gather them in. Mr. Graham Quinn, an ex-member of the club and Empire Games representative, was amongst the spectators on the stand. He is paying a holiday visit to Gisborne, but was not able to compete last evening as a result of a leg injury. However, he was able to give some advice to young runners and his presence at the meeting was appreciated by club members. Results were as follows: 100yds.
