DEFEAT OF DUCHESS FAITH IN CHAMBERLAIN CLAIM BY CONSERVATIVE VOTES SINCE MUNICH PACT (Elec. Tel. Copyright —United Press Assn.) (Reed. Dec. 23, 11.50 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. 22. The Duchess of Atholl, who had been the Unionist member for 15 years, resigned owing to differences with .the Government’s Foreign policy and was seeking re-election as an In • dependent, while Mr. Snadden was the official Conservative.

Sixty-seven per cent of the electorate' voted. Many were unable to poll owing do the roads being snowbound.

Mr. Snadden said the result repre sented a vote of confidence in the Prime Minister, Mr. Neville Chamberlain.

The Duchess of Atholl said: 1 still think the Governments lOioign policy is leading us into grave danger. I think there will be a general election before long, at which I expect to stand again.”

The total votes cast for Government candidates in eight by-elections since the Munich agreement is 196,686, compared with 176,796 for the Opposition.
