INTER-HOUSE SPORTS

SATURDAY'S CARNIVAL

FINE MARCHING DISPLAY SPECTACULAR FEATURES Spectacular features will be included in the programme of the first inter-house sports meeting, to be held in Gisborne on Saturday evening with (he co-operation of the major business firms and their staffs. The carnival is 10 be staged at the Childers Road Reserve, and a prelude to the competitive events will be the procession oi teams from the Post Office to the Reserve.

Appearance and smartness in marching will qualify the teams to compete for a special trophy, and there is an annual challenge _ shield for the team scoring moslt points in smartness, in team events, and in individual competition.

Inter-house sports have proved enormously successful in other towns, and the Gisborne Thirty Thousand Club, the promoting body f6r the Gisborne carnival, believes that the fixture will become one of the favourite summer features here.

With an almost unexpected degree of enthusiasm, the staffs of the kargej retail firms have thrown themselves into the preparations for the carnival, and it is assured that there will be a strong muster for the procession, which will leave the Post Office at 7 p.m., the teams having been instructed to be available there at 6.30 p.m. Route of Procession The route of the procession will be bv way of Gladstone road, and the W.E.C.M.R. Band will furnish the marching music, and also will take part in the general programme of the carnival. Mr. W. Anderson has been appointed marshal of the procession, and Messrs. T. G. Nowell and Vaughan, borough traffic inspectors, and the A.A. patrol, Mr. D. M. McGregor, will co-operate in handling the column. Selections of colours for the various business staffs have been made, Woolworths having chosen red and white, Adair Bros, white, Gamages white and green, McKenzies white with navy monogram, Cash Stores white and red, Flemings white and black, Fitzmaurice and Butler white and navy blue, Common, Shelton and Company white and green, McGruers royal blue and white, and the Post and Telegraph team black and white. The mingling of the teams in the grand parade at the reserve and in the maze march, an especially intriguing feature of the programme, should provide one of ,the carnival’s major attractions. Each team leader will carry a distinctive banner. Mesdames W. A. Bowie and A. G. Cowley have been appointed- to judge the teams for general smartness and uniformity, and Lieutenant F. H. Pickering and Sergeant-Major G. W. Keeble. Napier, will judge the marching display. Members of the Gisborne Amateur Harrier and Athletic Club will conduct the athletic events. Trophies Donated

Trophies for competition during the carnival have been donated by Mr. Barry Holmes, who makes available a challenge shield for annual competition' in all sections: by Mr. Leith Moore, whose trophy is for the best team-leader; by Mr. Alan De Costa, whose cup will be competed for in athletic events; by Messrs. Good and Company, whose trophy will be won by the best marching team; by Mr. F. Mockr.idge, Hastings, who gives a trophy for the best physical drill display; and by Auto Parts, Limited, whose cup will go to the best team in point of appearance.
