The president of the Board of Trade, Mr. Oliver Stanley, introduced a bill in the House of Commons to extend the powers of the board to give guarantees for the purpose of establishing or encouraging overseas trade, and the bill was formally read a first time. It amends the Exports Guarantees Act of 1937 under which aggregate the amount of the board's liabilities at any time was £50,000,000. The maximum under the bill is £75,000,000, with an additional £10.000,000 under another clause which authorises guarantees “in connection with any matter for which it appears expedient in tlie national interest that guarantees should ~be given.”
