The Daily Telegraph interviewed Mr. R. S. Hudson, the Parliamentary Secretary to (he Department of Oversea Trade, who .said that British industry would be organised, if necessary, to fight the German trade methods, not only in south-eastern Europe but in the markets throughout the world.
The British Government had no Indention of copying Germany’s methods, he continued. On the contrary, Britain would continue to conduct trade and commercial relations along the orthodox traditional financial lines, but new methods would be introduced as new situations arose.
The exact form of these methods was being considered by the Government.
Mr. Hudson emphasised that Britain did not want a trade war with Germany, but if no other way was left, Britain would not shirk such a war. The Government desired a trade agreement with Germany which other nations couid join, but until such an 'agreement was reached, and as long as Germany maintained the present trading methods, whereby she secured a stranglehold over various countries at the cost of her own people, Britain would be forced to step down in the arena and meet Germany at her own game.
“Her methods of destroying trade are unsettling conditions throughout the world, and they must be countered,” said Mr. Hudson.
A message from Berlin states that under the heading: “An English Challenge,” the Deutsche Allgemeine Zeitung says that Germany is not claiming a monopoly of the markets of central and south-eastern Europe and does not wish to exclude Britain. The paper adds that the Ottawa agreements closed large trade areas to other countries, and this was neither fair nor free competition.
