BAY OF PLENTY RAIN
MAIZE CROPS BENEFIT DAMAGE DONE TO LOADS Although only about half an inch of rain has fallen in the last few days, it has been sufficient to freshen pastures and give young maize crops a good start. More rain is needed to maintain dairy production and there is little chance now of catching up the leeway for the season.
Some trouble was experienced on new road construction work, especially on the Taneatua-Whakatane stretch of the main highway, which is at present being straightened and re-aligned in preparation for sealine. The surface cut up on temporary fillings and many motorists were in trouble. The road between Matata and To Puke was also in a bad stale near Ohinepanea.
