NOXIOUS WEEDS

ASSISTANCE SOUGHT " GRANT OF £IOOO LABOUR UNAVAILABLE (Special to the Herftld.) WAIROA, this day. • A decision was reached,, at the monthly meeting of the Wairoa County Council yesterday, that it should apply to the Department of Agriculture for a grant of £IOOO under its scheme for the eradication of noxious weeds in the county. . The decision was the result of advice received from the Director of the Live Stock Division of the department and also from the Employment Division of the Department of Labour that the Agricultural Department had decided to carry out a scheme similar to that in operation last season for the eradication of ragwort. The scheme provides for a grant from the Government for this work providing registered unemployed are used. . Difficulty was experienced in the Wairoa County last year because no registered unemployed could be found. A letter received from the Director ot'.the Live Stock Division of the Department of Agriculture suggested that the officer in charge of the employment office in the district should be. approached with a view to overcoming this difficulty. A report that the employment officer had been approached and it appeared that the council would have no chance of getting the men to carry out the work was made by the clerk, Mr. B. G. Signall. He added that the officer had stated that if the council was prepared to provide accommodation and transport he would make every endeavour to procure men from outside districts.

. chairman, Cr. A. T. Carroll, said that he had discussed the question with the stock inspector and it

had been suggested that the council should apply for a grant of £IOOO under the scheme. Cr. D. V. Thomas said that the problem was one of far too great a magnitude for the council to tackle. H e added that £IOOO would not go very far. It was decided that application should be made for £IOOO and that the chairman and engineer should confer with the stock inspector and the employment officer in an effort to make arrangements to obtain the necessary labour.
