COMMENT RESENTED
POTATOES NOT OFFERING SUPPLIES FOR EXPORT (l?er Press Association.) ASHBURTON, this day. Merchants rather resent the statement by the Minister of Marketing, the Hon. W. Nash, that some difficulty was experienced before in getting sufficient supplies of potatoes for export, said an Ashburton merchant yesterday. So far as local growers were concerned, none had been asked to quote lor export. Merchants had repeatedly asked for a share of the export business, the Minister replying that tne Government had no orders and was only collaborating with firms having overseas business.
The merchant affirmed that Mr. Picot, Director of Internal Marketing, who was in Ashburton yesterday, faueu io call on any merchants closely associated with the growers.
The merchant said that if the Government wanted potatoes at £3 a ton, it could get any quantity by going to the right merchants, adding that the growers were more than anxious to meet the market and get rid of their surplus.
