DEFEAT BY TASMANIA CONFER ENCE ON RULES INVITATION TO DOMINION (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (.Reed. Aug. 19, 9 a.m.) MELBOURNE, Aug. 18. At the inter-State basketball tournament to-day the games resulted as follow: — Tasmania defeated New Zealand, 32—17. Queensland defeated New South Wales, 22—10. Victoria defeated South Australia, 20—18. The New Zealand team was: Misses M. Matangi, E. Sinclair, F. Southon. M. Howe, J. Willson,- M. Tangye, and E. Howard. Tasmania played a good, open game, its definite passing movements giving the goal-throwers good opportunities. New Zealand lost through inaccurate shooting.
The conference on rules recommends the elimination of the centre bounce play outside the court, teams of seven players, 100 ft. by sUl't. courts and no guarding. The conference favoured the New Zealand personal contact and running rules and the English rules when the Australian Snd New Zealand rules differed. An invitation has been extended to an Australian team to participate in the New Zealand centennial tournament.
An inter-Empire conference has been suggested to be held in New Zealand in 1940. The game between Australia and New 'Zealand on Saturday will be played without the bounce.
