MANNING SEARCHLIGHTS
N.Z. COASTAL DEFENCES TASK FOR EX-SOLDIERS GOOD RESPONSE LIKELY (Per Proua Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. Preliminary indications are that there will be excellent support among returned soldiers for a proposal that returned men should find the personnel to man searchlights at defended parts of Wellington and Auckland, said the secretary of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association, Mr. S. J. Harrison, yesterday. Further inquiries were being made from the military authorities with a view to obtaining detailed data to be submitted to various branches of the R.S.A. When this information was received it would be supplied to those likely to be interested. The defence authorities stated in reply to inquiries that the conditions, under which returned men could be employed as suggested, were at present under consideration, but it as yet was too early to give any indication of their exact nature.
