Forty persons, including a European police sergeant, were injured in rioting to-day between Buddhist monks and Mahommcdans as a result of the publication of a book insulting Buddhists
One policeman is dead and 22 Indians and 11 Burmans and eight policemen were injured in the rioting. A detachment of the Yorkshire Light Infantry is standing by armed with machine-guns. A cordon was placed, .round the riot area and the situation was brought under control. Ten thousand vernacular leaflets signed by the Prime Minister and the Home Minister appeal to the public for peacefulness.
A gazette proscribing the offensive book is being issued in the morning.
