There is an exceptionally large amount of driftwood floating off the East Coast at present, according to Captain Frank Roll', master of the auxiliary scow Altair, which arrived at Gisborne this morning from Auckland, via Tauranga. Captain -Rotf said that yesterday the vessel had to dodge a number of logs and about 4 p.m. when abreast of Port Awanui the boat passed close by a particularly heavy piece of timber, measuring roughly 4ft. in diameter and 12ft. in length. The logs were a considerable danger to navigation. Captain Roff mentioned that on a recent trip from Gisborne to Auckland the scow fouled a log, which became fixed in the bracket or framework around the propeller, but clear of the blades. An attempt was made to free the ship, without success, and she had to tow the log for the greater part of teh journey.
