Challenge matches for large stakes have not been uncommon in professional golf both in England and the United States. However, the game between A. D. Loclie and S. F. Brews, of South Africa, and T. H. Cotton and R- A. Whitcombe. of Great Britain, was the first Empire challenge match to be played. The American professional, Walter Hagen, has played in a number of matches for large stakes, the most important being when he met Abe Mitchell in 1920. On that occasion the stakes were £SOO a side and Hagen, after being 4 down at the end of 30 holes, won by 2 and 1. Two years later Hagen met Archie Compston in a 72-hole challenge match for £SOO and Compston inflicted a crushing defeat on his rival, as he won by 18 up and 17 to play. That this serious reverse did not affect Hagen's supreme confidence was shown when the American won the British open championship a few weeks later.
