SCOTS SCHOOLBOY'S TOUR

HOLIDAY IN DOMINION

OTAKI SHIELD WINNER

(Pur Proas Association. 1

AUCKLAND, this day

Wearing a kilt, a stalwart Scots schoolboy, Douglas P. Fox, aged 18, was among the most interested passengers when the liner Rangitata berthed at Auckland after her voyage from England. School captain of Robert Gordon's College, Aberdeen, Fox is the winner for 1938 of the Otaki Shield, which carried with it a free return trip from England to New Zealand. He is the second winner of the shield.

Definite plans for a commercial career have been decided upon by Fox. He said he intended to take a Bachelor of Commerce degree at the London University on his return, and then tp take up commerce as a career.

Before the Rangitata leaves on her return voyage next month, Fox hopes to see a great.deal of New Zealand. The present is his first trip abroad, and he is anxious to miss no opportunity of seeing what the Dominion has to offer. He was not aware of what arrangements had been made for him in New Zealand, but he said the Government was planning an itinerary for him. If possible, arrangements Will be made for Fox to meet Gordonians living in the Dominion, there being former pupils of the college in Auckland, Wellington, and Dunedin.

The holiday which Fox is now beginning in New Zealand is in partial commemoration of the gallant fight of the New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Otaki with the German raider Moewe in 1917. Relatives of the lute Lieutenant A. B. Smith, V.C., of thq Royal Naval Reserve, who commanded the Otaki and who was educated at Robert Gordon's College, presented to the college, in memory of the fight, a shield to be awarded annually to the boy pre-eminent in character, leadership and athletics. The New Zealand Shipping Company supplemented the gift with a free return trip to New Zealand.
