Following a conference between Mr. R, Eddy, representative of the New Zealand Workers -Jnion, Mr. W. Nicholson, representing the New Zea-' land Sheepowners' Federation and Mr J. W. Butcher, Government Statistician, the shearing rates for the 193839 season were announced. The rates are on a sliding scale in accordance with the wool prices. Shearers shearing by machine, are to be paid not less than 28s Cd per 100, with rations; shearing iambs by machine, not less than 28s 6d per 100, with rations; hand shearing, not less than 31s per 100, with rations. In cases where the shearers find their, rations, an allowance of 4s a day is to be paid. For shearing stud sheep and hogget rams, the rate and a half is to be paid, and for other rams double ordinary rates.

Shed hands and pressers paid by the week are to receive £4 4s Cd and by the hour, 2s 3£d. All other shed hands paid by the week are to receive ££3 14s 6d and by the hour 2s lid. The wages for cooks for 12 men or under are £4 14s 6d a week, or 18s 3d a day, if employed for less than seven days. Where over 12 men are employed, the wages are to be increased by 2s Cd a week for each additional man to be cooked for. Where the number exceeds 18 men, an assistant is to be employed, and where the number is over 28 men, the rate is to be fixed by mutual agreement. The wages for cook's assistant are to be £3 19s 6d a week ,or 15s 6d a day if employed for less than seven days. Except in cases otherwise provided, rations are to be provided as well.
