RIVERS IN FLOOD
EAST COAST REPORTS
FACTORY CREEK BLOCKED
BIG SUP AT TE ARATIOA
All the Coast fivers and streams were in flood yesterday, following heavy overnight rain, reports the Herald's correspondent at Tikitiki. A considerable amount of traffic dislocation occurred as the result of flooding in the open crossings, and of slips on several of the hills traversed by the East Coast main highway.
At one stage yesterday eight cars were held up at Factory Creek, Ruatoria, and the county grader was being employed in taking them through the swollen stream. Reports from the top evid of the Coast were that a bad slip had occurred on Hospital Hill, Te Araroa, and that difficulty was 'being experienced in reaching the Karakatuwhero bridge because of the flooding of ,the approaches.
Small slips on Takapau Hill and on Whangara Hill were encountered by motorists using the' Coast route yesterday, and a great deal of work will be involved in repairing the damage. At Puketiti station, near Tokomaru Bay, just under 3in. of -rain was recorded for the 24 hours to 9 a.m. yesterday. At Tikitiki over 2in. was recorded for the same period. The Waiapu River was high in flood throughout yesterday.
