A message from Shanghai says the Chinese claim to have recaptured Hsiangkow, one of the key points ol the defence of Hankow, after a coun-ter-attack in which there were 4000 Japanese casualties.
Chinese warplanes, in raids throughout Saturday along 100 miles of the Yangtse River, sank two Japanese gunboats and set. fire to two transports. The Chinese raiders escaped, despite attacks by Japanese pursuit planes.
A message from Canton says that 33 Japanese bombing pianos on Saturday extensively wrecked the southern end of the Hankow-Canton railway over which a train carrying 300 foreign refugees was scheduled to travel to long Kong next Tuesday.
The Domei News Agency at lokio estimates that 800,000 workers have been rendered idle as a result of tae control of commodities introduced lasi Thursday. It is hoped that many will be absorbed into the munitions industry.
